海西蒙古族藏族自治州是典型的高寒干燥大陆性气候区，分为柴达木盆地干旱荒漠区和盆地四周山地高寒区[8]，地势西北高，东南低。 [12]海西古为西羌地，明初，辖境为安定、阿瑞、曲先、罕东四卫地，由西宁卫兼管。 清雍正三年（1725年），辖境州境划定9个蒙古旗统归“钦差办理青海蒙古番子事务大臣”管辖。 民国十九年（1930年），设都兰县辖境州全境，上隶青海省。 1985年5月21日，定名为“海西蒙古族藏族自治州”。 [4][11]2005年，海西州柴达木循环经济试验区成为全国首批13个循环经济产业试点园区之一；2018年全州率先在全国“三区三州”实现全域整体脱贫；近年来连续两次荣获“全国民族团结进步示范州”和全国社会治安综合治理最高奖“长安杯”。
